About SELF Technology
SELF Technology builds privacy-first tools: an AI assistant, encrypted messenger, wallet, and storage vault, all running on SELF Chain, a Layer 1 blockchain designed to put the individual, not the institution, at the centre. It was founded in 2023 by Jonathan MacDonald on a single conviction: privacy is not a feature. It is a right. The SELF Alliance is how that conviction reaches beyond our own products and into the world.

How It Works
The SELF Alliance is always open. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis from individuals, teams, and organisations anywhere in the world. Our Alliance Approval Committee meets on a regular cycle to review everything we receive and select the ideas with the greatest potential for real-world impact.
We don't fund ideas and walk away. We build them.
Every selected idea receives a dedicated engineering team, world-class infrastructure, and up to $500,000 of technology — designed, built, and delivered.
Phase One: Build
Once selected, the originator joins a founding kick-off with SELF's engineering team. Together they define the vision, agree the roadmap, and set the technical scope. From there, SELF's team designs, builds, and delivers the product on SELF Chain. The originator stays involved throughout, with regular checkpoints to keep the build true to their vision.
Phase Two: Scale
Responsibility then passes to the originator, who takes full ownership of commercialisation, deployment, and growth — bringing their domain expertise, networks, and ambition to scale the solution globally. In all communications, SELF is credited as the technology infrastructure behind the solution.
Once live, the software belongs to the originator. SELF provides complimentary lifetime maintenance and upgrades, so the product stays current, secure, and built for the long term. There is no ongoing cost.

GridMind: A Decentralised Alternative to the AI Data Centre
The problem
AI runs on hyperscale data centres that consume electricity at a rate rivalling entire nations. That infrastructure is fragile, fossil-fuel dependent, and controlled by a handful of corporations. A startup with a brilliant model cannot compete. A university in the developing world cannot take part.
The idea
A team of distributed-computing researchers submit GridMind to The SELF Alliance: a global mesh of everyday devices — laptops, servers, and edge nodes — coordinated by SELF Chain into a single privacy-preserving AI compute network. No central control. No fossil-fuel dependency. Thousands of participants worldwide, together delivering compute that rivals the largest data centres on earth.
The build
SELF's engineering team works with the originator to design and deliver GridMind on SELF Chain, then hands ownership to the team to commercialise and scale.
The impact
- Energy: 68% lower consumption per compute unit than centralised data centre infrastructure.
- Emissions: around 2.3 million tonnes of CO₂ avoided annually at full network scale.
- Access: AI compute opened to researchers in 34 countries with no prior viable infrastructure.
- Growth: more than 40,000 nodes across six continents within 18 months.

Why We Do This
Jonathan founded SELF because he believed technology had lost its way — that the platforms people relied on most had become the threats they most needed protection from.
The SELF Alliance exists for the same reason. Not for profit. Not for recognition. The problems are real, the technology is ready, and someone has to step forward.
This is about the legacy we leave for our children, and theirs: a world where technology serves humanity, the planet is protected, knowledge is free, and every person holds the tools to shape their own future.
There is a proverb that a society grows great when people plant trees whose shade they will never sit in. That is the shade we are growing towards.
